Discover and be part of your own music revolution!

By Thaddaeus Thompson

You become part of your music revolution when you are in charge of your business and understand what is happening around you! This means you cannot just be a singer or an instrument player and leave the rest of the work (Which is usually the hardest part) to someone else, and assume he or she will work his or her life off to shovel the gains into your bank account. If you are one of those lucky folks who sit at home and have people banging at their doors begging to buy their CDs, then this message is not for you.

Unlike other business owners, musicians are seldom in charge of their business. Research by T&T Music Records shows the overall income ratio of musicians to the record companies they work stands at a very poor ratio of 30:1. If you do not know what that means, it simply means out of every $30 that is generated from your song, only 1$ goes into your wallet. Your contract may read otherwise, but that is what really happens (30:1). In order to understand what is happening around you and your resources, including musical and business talents, you need to wake up and be fully mobilized or activated. You do not necessarily need a degree in business to realize what “Mr. Bigger Do” is doing to you; look inside your wallet and the answers are right there. I hear many people saying, “I will get me a manager and he will take care of business.” Good luck. Know that the manager will only join the train when it is full of diamonds. You will need a manager when you are established, but it is highly recommended that you learn how to manage your business. Learn and inform yourself about what is required to become a successful artist! A “process” leads to the path of success. In every successful event, there was a process. 20 years ago, you could sit back and say, "I am the band and not the businessman.” Today you must be both. Here, the required process is learning to be part of the process, and taking charge. This is not to have you be the artist and the manager at the same time, but to be able to understand how to fully enjoy the fruit of your labor.

There are various forms of learning and they vary from one individual to another. Some learn from long experience, others learn from Counseling. Some take courses or hire a mentor, others device their own learning method. Bottom line is, whichever method you choose, it requires full-time devotion, determination, and an experienced professional or mentor to help foster development. Try to know what works best for you and apply it. Doing nothing is not an option. The appropriate time to claim you are in control is when you are able to easily identify your strengths and weaknesses and improve on the shortfalls. Discovering your artistic talents and applying them effectively could help your career in so many ways and may even resolve some financial problems. Unlike other professions, the music profession (one of the most sophisticated) does not necessarily flourish after a degree in music or through GOODLUCK.

Every profession requires adequate knowledge, and the music business is no exception; there are rules. You may know how to write a song, play an instrument, and/or perform live on stage, but that is not all that is required; someone must study the market, create or follow a trend, someone must tell the world you exist.

Many artists and bands believe it takes luck to find the record company or get signed. This believe may be partly true, but fact is, if you don't show professionalism in your presentations, you may find it hard to break through. We created Artist Counseling Program to help artist meet the requirements of the industry.

The Trademark Factor
This is making you unique. You need a trademark that distinguishes you from the other million; you need a unique way of singing that distinguishes you from the other million; you need a unique appearance that distinguishes you from the other million; you need a unique composition that distinguishes you from the other million. Finally, to succeed you need to be a lone star: You must sound and present yourself uniquely.

Your first obstacle to success is you; do not be hesitant to learn and be open to constructive criticism. The second obstacle is the competition, therefore start identifying your competitors, know what you can do that they are not doing, know your art in and out, i.e. perfection, and forcefully join the race. The only way to win is remaining persistent and convincing. It takes a combination of several factors to make it work. You need some kind of discipline (not drill) to achieve success. To succeed you need to do away with certain habits and get serious (work hard). After all, your aim is to win. None of today's successful artists became successful without working "VERY HARD."

Record companies pay much attention to new talents who show difference in creativity and are innovative. The question now is, how do you make the expected difference? How do you make the expected difference without any trace of originality from somewhere? The world had a Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, etc., and worse of all they still exist, so why do you think it is possible to present a second Michael Jackson.

My point is why don't you add some sweetness to your compositions? Add a flavor; throw in some interesting stuff, beat, instrument, etc. Be creative! That is how you distinguish yourself from the other million. That is how you become part of your own music world. The common  challenges many artists (both established and non-established) face today are stiff competition, perfecting skills, high expectations from vendors, and the ability to deliver exactly what the market demands. This is where we, as music business professionals, come in. Artist Counseling Services effectively addresse most of the career issues and help educate musicians on what is required to be successful. The goal is to help you learn how to market yourself and your music. Your success is our quality!
