YOU WANT TO BE A SINGER
By: Stan Cullimore

The thing is, most people want to be lead singer really, mainly because it is the job with the highest amount of fame and glory attached. What's more, they all firmly believe that they are good enough to do the job.

     The trouble is, they aren't.
So in all probability, neither are you.
     But!!!
…. Don't let this depress you. You don't actually need an ability to sing in order to be a hugely successful pop star (although it does make it a lot easier if you can).

What you do need is personality, strength of character and an ability to cope with criticism - because you'll probably get a lot of it. If you still think singing might be the one for you, the thing to do is to give it a whirl, then try and be honest with yourself. Everyone else will be. They'll fall over themselves to tell you just how bloody awful you are. This is where your strength of character and ability to cope with criticism comes in. And don't worry, although they might be right, they would say that even if you were brilliant.

[It will probably come as no surprise to the reader to discover that I wanted to be a lead singer at one point. After the first two songs of my first appearance, I noticed that not only were the audience leaving the room, but so were the other members of the band. I took the hint, and decided to concentrate on singing backing vocals, where people expect you to sound slightly awful.]

There we have the list of options open to you. Don't be afraid to be like myself, and try various things until you hit upon the one that is right for you. Also, don't be afraid to go for two things at once, particularly if it involves singing and playing an instrument. If you can master these two things you will then be ready to step on to the next, and very important, step. That is ………..song writing.
